The monumental complex of Coaner is located in the municipality of Sant Mateu de Bages, very close to Súria, in a quiet and picturesque valley of great landscape and architectural interest within the Plan of Areas of Natural Interest of the Sierra de Castelltallat.
The complex consists of the church of Sant Julià Coaner, the castle tower and the Sanctuary of the Virgin of Coaner and it has a Lombard Romanesque architecture.
The church of Sant Julià de Coaner is located inside the castle, next to the tower. It is an 11th century building, with a basilica floor plan with three naves, covered with barrel vaults, semicircular, reinforced by two toral arches each. Together with the Can Serra farmhouse, they offer a Romanesque ensemble of peculiar beauty over a rocky landscape.
The Tower is the only surviving element of the old castle. It is a circular construction, very slender.
The sanctuary of Our Lady of Coaner is located near the church. It was erected in 1654, to perpetuate, according to tradition, the memory of the discovery of the Virgin at the foot of the torrent, at this same point. The Virgin is a Romanesque polychrome wood carving, dating from the thirteenth century and currently kept in the temple of the Sacred Heart of Valls de Torroella, for security reasons.
Excursions to Coaner are a great way to enjoy the great beauty of the landscape, heritage and geology of the Unesco World Geopark of Central Catalonia.
